Alton, Mo. –On January 29, 2024, the Alton Lady Comets basketball team went up against the Bakersfield Lions at the Alton High School. Both Comet teams won- the junior varsity girls won 32-20, and the varsity girls won 67-43.
Junior Varsity
The junior varsity game was a close one, with both teams keeping up with each other. At the end of the first quarter, the Comets were ahead 12-7. As the game progressed, the Comets edged out the Lions for a 32-20 win.
Senior Recognition
Between the JV and varsity games, the 2024 Alton senior athletes were recognized. Over twenty seniors who have participated in basketball, cross country, and baseball, among other sports, were honored.
Donation
During the JV game, a container was set up at the entrance for donations for Melissa French’s family. Melissa, who is from Mammoth Spring, was killed in an accident earlier this month. Between the games, the amount raised was announced: $328.
Varsity
The varsity girls struggled a little bit at first. The game was close during the first quarter, with the largest lead being only four points. With 2:45 in the quarter, Evin Montgomery (#34 for Comets) hit a three-pointer. At the end of the first quarter, the Comets were leading 15-12.
A Comet Lead
In the second quarter, the Comets started working together better. They steadily lengthened the lead, keeping the Lions to only six points. Miley Haney (#14 for Comets) got another three-pointer for the team.
Comets Win
Although there were several turnovers from both teams, the Lady Comets continued to score and make the gap bigger. The final score was 67-43, with the Comets taking the win.
