Alton, Mo. –The Thayer Bobcats and Alton Comets junior varsity and varsity boys basketball teams went up against each other in an Oregon County Showdown on February 10, 2024, at the Alton High School. In both games, Thayer won; the junior varsity won 55-35, and the varsity won 83-61.
Junior Varsity
During the first half of the junior varsity matchup, both teams were evenly matched. At the end of the first quarter, the score was tied 8-8. Brendon Spencer (#1 for Bobcats) and Kade Clary (#11 for Comets) made three-pointers for their teams. At halftime, the score was 23-19, with Thayer in the lead.
Second Half
Kade Clary made another three-pointer in the third quarter. Although the Comets tried their best, the Bobcats started edging away from them. Payton Weyland (#22 for Comets) also had a three-pointer in the second half. The final score was 55-35, with Thayer taking the win.
Varsity Boys
The varsity boys’ game was an exciting one. Both teams kept up with each other, with the score at halftime being only 11 points apart. Cole Trantham (#34 for Comets) made several three-pointers in the game. During the entire game, there were several turnovers, often back-to-back. Devin Harrington (#3 for Bobcats) made four slam dunks during the game, with two in the first quarter. The score at halftime was 41-30, with Thayer in the lead.
More Excitement
Mark Spencer (#5 for Bobcats), Easton Pitts (#1 for Bobcats), and Dillon Weyland (#2 for Comets) also made three-pointers in the game. In the last couple of minutes in the third quarter, the teams went back and forth with several steals. The score at the end of the third quarter was 63-43, with Thayer still in the lead. In the beginning of the final quarter, Alton was getting several steals, and was getting fouled by Thayer multiple times. The final score was 83-61, with Thayer taking the win.
