You’ve probably heard of volleyball on the beach and volleyball on a court; maybe even volleyball in a pool and volleyball in the snow. But have you ever heard of volleyball on water? Ljublijana, Slovenia, has introduced a new form of volleyball: volleyball on water!
Volleyball on Water?
Volleyball on water is just as it sounds. The floating platform is 52 feet by 26 feet. The submerged court is 46 feet by 23 feet. The platform is 6 inches beneath the water. [1] Each team consists of two individuals of the same gender. The game is played like any other volleyball game. Games are played during the day and at night; during night games, the court and net are lit up by LED lights.
Tournament
For the past couple of years, Ljublijana has been hosting the volleyball on water tournament games. The tournament lasts two days, and there are two divisions for the men and women.
A Challenge
Although one may think that playing volleyball on water is easy; it is not. Piotr Ilewicz, one of the players, said the following:
I am amazed after this game. When I was watching the finals of the men’s tournament, I thought it would be easier to play, but honestly, when I started to play, I saw that it was really tough. [2]
