Thayer, Mo. – The Thayer Bobcats football team lost 30-28 to the Hayti Indians at the Thayer, Missouri High School football field on Friday, August 28, 2020, for their season opener.
Earlier in the day, rain threatened a messy game. When game time arrived, the sun was shining. As the night progressed, it was getting foggier and humid. The cheerleaders worked hard to keep the crowd cheering for the team. The marching band played for the fans at halftime to keep the crowd entertained.
Kickoff Time
To start the game, the Bobcats received the kickoff. Nothing happened during their possession. When the Indians got the ball, they made a touchdown by one of their players. They tried for a two-point conversion but failed to get the extra points. During the first quarter, the officials called for a timeout for measurement since the player got so close to getting a new down. Both teams traded different penalties in the first half.
A Close Match
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Bobcats got a touchdown but failed to get the two-point conversion. The Hayti Indians then had two false starts and got ten yards for the penalty in total. They were then on their second down and twenty yards to go. However, the Indians did manage to get past those penalties for a first down. When the Indians had their next possession, they had reached the 1-yard line. The Bobcats stopped their opponents three times but on the fourth try, the Indians went into the endzone. The score was now 12-6 with the Indians in the lead. By halftime, the Bobcats were looking hopeful with a lead of 21-18.
Bobcats Lose
The third quarter brought the Indians onto the field with energy. However, the Hayti quarterback was sacked tow times by the Bobcats. The Bobcats tried to come back and win, but they fell short by three points. When the clock ran out, the final score ended up being 30-28: Hayti defeats the Bobcats.
The Bobcats stands were about 80% filled as residents wanted to watch a sporting event that didn’t have political ramifications. The guest team fans almost filled their stands.
