Alton, Mo. – All of Oregon County, Missouri, is buzzing with eclipse excitement. The eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, 2024, and visitors are coming the preceding Friday, even Thursday, to reserve their viewing place. Most campers are arriving Friday evening to make a camping weekend. For all of those involved, this is what to expect.
Alton
Although the county seat, Alton, Missouri, opted out of festivities on the square, the Farmer’s Market will open on Saturday at Tucker Creek Park. If it is wet weather, they meet in the pavilion. While many home-grown produce foods are unavailable this early, various other foods and homemade items are available. Locally grown meats, homemade Amish baked goods, and even homemade baskets will be sold at the market. The market is located behind the First Baptist Church on Highway 19 South. Go past the pool area (unless inclement weather) to the walking trail below. They offer plenty of parking for everyone. North of Alton is the beautiful Eleven Point River, where many go boating. Other fun activities for the weekend include the BB Road fish fry on Saturday evening and the pulled pork dinner at the First Baptist Church. You can check all of the local events here.
While the Court Square Cafe is open throughout the weekend, the parking on the square was filling up fast.
Thayer/ Mammoth Spring
By Thursday evening, traffic was getting thicker in the Thayer area. While the festivities include events at the school grounds and the Assembly of God Church, one must plan ahead to be there on time.
Grocery stores in each town are getting busier, with locals stocking up and visitors buying the weekend treats. Plan for time and do not rush. Be aware of horse and buggies, too. While back roads that are dirt may look like an option, know before you go. Waving to neighbors will make traffic jams more pleasant.
