At the end of September last year, Hurricane Helene made a surprising track. Cruising up from the gulf, she retained her power into Tennessee and North Carolina. Roads, communities, and livelihoods were demolished. Americans were told it would take months or years to make the interstate and roadways operational. We were told FEMA ran out of money. We were told a lot of things.
Then, Trump came. Even before his inauguration, he visited North Carolina, asked what was most needed, and gave it to them: internet service. Once in office, he aimed to help those in need and open the highways. Now, Interstate 40 has reopened!
The Storm
Hurricane Helene arrived in Florida on September 26, 2024, as a Category 4. It continued on land, retaining its strength. Much of the Appalachian lands are rough and hilly with no alternate routes; homes and communities are built on hills. When the storm hit, it cycled north into Tennessee and North Carolina. Then it stalled, dropping much water. Rivers crested high, breaking records. Unexpected floodwaters carried away roads, homes, and communities.
Biden Administration
Biden had placed Buttigieg in charge of America’s transportation. As he was not fully qualified for this position, he gave vague estimates when the roads would be working again: months or possibly years. In offering government assistance, FEMA ran out of money.
Trump
In less than two months in office, Trump set out to help the hurting people. Transportation Secretary Duffy took the task at hand. He removed financial barriers and brought road workers to places most needed. Interstate 40 reopened on March 3, 2025. Admittedly, it has only one lane in either direction. But road crews can now work on the other side of the interstate, along with state roads. Travellers can cross straight through. Remember that there may be traffic lines at certain times as more vehicles need to cross. However, even one lane open in each direction is preferred over a long detour.
We are happy that roads are opening for these devastated families. This is a step to rebuilding their lives.
