Road Funding Imperiled By Stay At Home Order

Since the coronavirus began its evil spread, people have decided to stay home and self-quarantine. The government stepped in and issued stay at home orders for all but necessary vocations. Road funds are imperiled by citizens staying at home and avoiding contact with others.

How Did This Happen?

Staying at home means fewer people are out driving. By not driving vehicles, drivers purchase less fuel. Less fuel purchased means fewer fuel taxes gained by the government. Fewer fuel taxes from the government means less money for rebuilding, even maintaining, bridges and roads.

Reduced traffic causes a sharp drop in state revenue from fuel taxes, tolls, and other user fees. This loss of income can cause delays in thousands of projects, here in Missouri and across the country.

What Is Washington D.C. Doing?

State transportation agencies asked Congress for immediate funds. These funds would prevent major cuts in projects over the next year and a half. These agencies are also requesting a long-term plan that doubles the regular funding going to state agencies. A $2 trillion stimulus plan was enacted last month for public transportation. Nonetheless, Congress scheduled nothing for state highways or bridges.

What Effect Do We See?

One local area that was to receive funds was a new highway interchange. This interchange would provide access to the expanded Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains. OMC (Ozark Medical Center) has the area’s largest employers. It serves approximately 40,000 patients in eight rural counties of southern Missouri and Northern Arkansas.

Ambulances are running as usual. Detours are well marked. but “That direct interchange would be nice.” per Danial Marshall, the chief officer for South Howell County Ambulance District. [1] West Plains administrator Tom Stehn said of a finishing deadline, “that timeline is kind of in the air.” [2] due to the COVID-19 precautions.
