Tropical Storm Hilary made landfall in southern California on Sunday, August 24, 2023. This makes Hilary the first tropical storm to make landfall in California in 84 years. [1]
Starting Off
On August 16th, Hilary was just a tropical rainstorm. Rapidly, though, Hilary became a category 4 hurricane. On August 19th, thunderstorms part of the hurricane caused flooding in Mexico. [2]
California
On August 20th, Hurricane Hilary turned into a tropical storm as it made landfall in southern California. Several places have gotten over eight inches of rain so far.
Other Storm
The only other tropical storm that hit California in the twentieth century was El Cordonazo in 1939. The storm killed forty-five people and caused two million dollars in damages [3]
